Margaret Gabe

January 18, 1932 — December 3, 2016

Margaret Alma Brownback Gabe, age 84, of Midwest City, Oklahoma formerly of Linn County, Kansas passed away on Saturday, December 3, 2016. Margaret was born on January 28, 1932 at Blue Mound, Kansas to William Earl and Kezia Ellen (Reynolds) Brownback. Margaret attended Finley Grade School and graduated third in her class from Parker High School in 1949. Margaret had a strong work ethic which began early in life. Between her Junior and Senior year she worked at St. John''s Hospital in Iola for a dollar a day and room and board. While still in high school, Margaret took a civil service test and was called in the fall of 1949 to come to work in Topeka at the Kansas Board of Health. On February 10, 1951 she married John Richard Gabe of Topeka. To this union was born four children; James, Ronald, John and Elizabeth. Mr. Gabe worked for the Santa Fe Railroad and the family lived in Topeka, Park Forest, Illinois, Nixon, New Jersey and finally settled in Oklahoma City in 1964. Margaret and John divorced in 1974. Margaret worked for Liberty Mutual Insurance Company for 25 years, retiring in 1992. Margaret enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, word finds, spider solitaire, and visiting with family. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Betty Joan Brownback and Rosalie Ellen Weaver; her daughter, Elizabeth Erin Gabe Pirri in 2010; and her step-father, Alfred Allen "Cap" McVey. Survivors include three sons and their wives, James and Alona Gabe, Ronald and Cindy Gabe, and John "Jack" and Atoma Gabe; three brothers and their wives, Donnie and Betty Brownback, Tom and Judy Brownback, and Dewey and Kathy Brownback; two sisters, Katherine Stever, and Judy McArdle and husband Bob; son-in-law, Mike Pirri; and eight grandchildren. Visitation will be 6:00 to 7:00 pm, Thursday, December 8, 2016 at Schneider Funeral Home, Mound City Chapel. Funeral service will be 10:30 am Friday at the Mound City Chapel. Burial will follow in Goodrich Cemetery, Parker, Kansas. The family suggests contributions to Susan G. Komen Foundation in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box J, Mound City, KS 66056.
