Mary Sylvester

Mary Eugene "Jean" Sylvester, age 101, of Pleasanton, Kansas died Sunday April 20, 2008 at Mercy Health Center in Fort Scott, Kansas. Jean was born on October 13, 1906 in Butler County, Kansas the daughter of Fred and Minnie Ann Cox Knapp. She worked at Pratt &Whitney during World War II and later at Braemoor in Pleasanton. She was married to Lemuel Franklin Sylvester. He preceded her in death in October of 1962. Also preceding her were three brothers, Freddie, Ralph and Merl, two sisters, Mae and Charline, two grandchildren, one half brother, Frank, and one half sister Helen. Jean was a member of the First Baptist Church in Pleasanton, the Garment Workers Union, and the VFW Auxillary. She served on the board at SEK Cap and Concern, was treasurer of Congregate Meals, and volunteered for over twenty years at the Linn County Museum. Survivors include one son Lemuel Franklin Sylvester Jr. of Olathe, Kansas, two daughters, Betty Avalon McGee of Shawnee, Kansas and Mary Lynn Sylvester of Pleasanton, one sister Dorothy Lee Shaffer, five grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 10 AM Wednesday April 23, 2008 at the First Baptist Church in Pleasanton, Kansas. Friends may call from 9 AM until service time Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in the Independence Cemetery near Hume, Missouri. The family suggests contributions to the First Baptist Church or the Linn County Museum.
