Samuel Stump

Samuel T. Stump, 92, of Blue Mound, Kansas died at 9:40 pm on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at Allen County Hospital, Iola. Sam was born November 15, 1924 in Blue Mound, Kansas to David and Nellie May (Day) Stump. After graduating from Blue Mound High School, he attended what is now Pittsburg State University until his enlistment in the US Navy. He enlisted in the US Navy on August 19, 1943 and proudly served his country as a Pharmacist''s Mate Third Class during World War II. He was honorably discharged on April 16, 1946. Upon his completion of service to his country, he attended Baker University to complete his Bachelor of Arts in Biology. He was a member of the Blue Mound American Legion and the Blue Mound United Methodist Church where he served on many church boards. He was a very accomplished trombonist and pianist. He played piano for not only his home church but for many churches in the area. Sam was a farmer and a rural letter carrier. On August 21, 1949 he married Francelene "Alberta" Torkelson at the Methodist Church in Baldwin City, Kansas. They were blessed with two daughters, Vicki and Debbie. Sam was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Alberta on November 26, 2006; and one grandson, Steven Hedges. Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Vicki and Jerry Smith of Tulsa, OK and Debbie and Rob Hedges of Springfield, MO; one sister, Mary Barbara Foster; three grandchildren, Melissa Hedges, Angela Hedges, and Tommy Hedges and his wife Lauren; and one great-grandchild on the way. The funeral service for Samuel will be at 10:00 am on Thursday, January 12, 2017 at Blue Mound United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Pleasant View Cemetery. The visitation will be on Wednesday, January 11, 2017 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Schneider Funeral Home and Crematory, Mound City Chapel. The family suggests contributions to Blue Mound United Methodist Church in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box J, Mound City, Kansas 66056.
