Viola Ruth Mundell Levering, age 93, died Wednesday, April 30, 2008 at the Country View Nursing Home, Prescott, Kansas. She was born March 4, 1915 at Richwoods, Missouri to George & Henrietta Mayor Turntine. She was married to Howard Darius Mundell April 14, 1935. They lived in the Centerville and Garnett areas the majority of their life. Viola enjoyed making garden, raising chickens and cooking for her family and friends. "Vie" (as everyone knew her) worked at the Husted Grocery Store in Centerville, Kansas for many years. She later took a job with Kingsolver's Pharmacy Store in Garnett, Kansas and worked there until Burns Pharmacy purchased the business. She worked for Burns until she was 85, serving coffee, making sodas and dipping ice cream at the Old Time Soda Fountain. She loved her job and enjoyed visiting with the customers. It was a sad day for her when she retired because of failing eye sight. Vie loved to cook and no one left her home without a meal or refreshments. She always wanted to be remembered as a giving and honest woman. Viola was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Mundell in 1969, her second husband, Emmett "Pete" Peterson in 1981 and her third husband, Donald Levering in 1996; a brother, Luther Turntine; two sisters, Dorothy Milward and Louise Lincoln; a step granddaughter and a step-son, Richard Levering. She is survived by a daughter, Pat West & husband, Harold of Mound City, Kansas; a son, Johnnie Mundell & wife, Phyllis of Parker, Kansas; a brother, Harold Turntine & wife, Itha Jean of Topeka, Kansas; a niece, Donna Gray (that was like a second daughter) & husband, David of Topeka, Kansas; seven grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. She is also survived by her Peterson step-family; Jerry Peterson & wife, Velma, Neal Peterson & wife, Jeannie & Kelly Peterson & wife, Tammy; fifteen step grandchildren; seventeen step great grandchildren. She is also survived by her Levering step-family, Don Levering wife, Mary; Dennis Levering & wife, Connie and Judy Levering Napier & husband, Hubert; eighteen step grandchildren; thirty four step great grandchildren and one step great great grandchild. She was known as "Grandma Vie" to all of them and enjoyed all of them. Her apartment was full of their pictures. To several nieces & nephews and other relatives she also answered to as "Vie". Services will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday, May 5, 2008 at the United Methodist Church, Mound City, Kansas. Visitation will be from 2:30 to 4:00 PM, Sunday at the chapel. Contributions are suggested to United Methodist Church, Mound City or Salvation Army. Interment will be in the Centerville Cemetery, Centerville, Kansas.
