Walter Thatcher

July 1, 1924 — August 2, 2008

Walter Raymond Thatcher, age 84, of Pleasanton, Kansas, passed away Saturday, August 2, 2008 at his home. He was born July 1, 1924 in Girard, Kansas, the son of Frank and Maude Mooney Thatcher. His family moved to Pleasanton where his father and grandfather worked in the coal mines. He attended the Pleasanton Schools. Walter was proud to be a World War II veteran. He served with the Army Air Corps in the South Pacific as a supply clerk. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. On September 3, 1947 he married Clidenna Springer at the RLDS Church in Mapleton, Kansas. He worked for the MK&T Railroad as a telegrapher. After 11years of traveling from town to town in parts of Kansas and Missouri he decided to change occupations. After completing barber college in Kansas City he returned to Pleasanton and opened Thatchers Barbershop. He was active in the community organizations including the Chamber of Commerce, Rotary, Pleasanton School Board, Pleasanton Housing Authority and Linn County Democrats. Walter devoted his life to serving God and was an elder in the Community of Christ Church. He was pastor and enjoyed going to church camps and conferences. He likes to travel and went with his wife, Clidenna on a couple of church medical missions to Haiti. He enjoyed buying, selling and collecting antiques and became skilled at repairing old clocks. He was preceded in death by his wife, Clidenna and three sisters, Helen Reed, Louise Springer and Maxine Lee. He will be remembered for his deep love and commitment to God, his family church and community. Walter will be sadly missed by a son, Andrew Thatcher; two daughters, Cinda Reynolds and husband, Tim, Regina McDaniel and husband, Maurice, all of Pleasanton, Kansas; three grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Services will be held at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, August 5, 2008 at the Coffel-Schneider Chapel, Pleasanton, Kansas. Visitation will be one hour prior to service time. Contributions are suggested to the Community of Christ Church, Fort Scott, Kansas. Interment will be in the Pleasanton Cemetery.
