Louise Shattuck

November 28, 1933 — March 6, 2023

Louise Marie Shattuck, age 89, Prescott, Kansas, passed away Monday, March 6, 2023. She was born in a farmhouse west of Prescott on November 28, 1933 the daughter of Ed and Avis (Smith) McIntyre. Louise started her education in a one room schoolhouse at the age of five. Her sister, LaVerne, had already taught Louise to read. So, she was immediately promoted to second grade. When her country school closed in fifth grade, she started school in town in Prescott. It was at this time she and Lyle met. Not long after, they could be found bicycling around town, Lyle on the seat and Louise perched confidently on the handlebars.

As a little girl growing up on the farm, Louise was no stranger to a strong work ethic. Milking cows before and after school was something she was good at, although we always heard of the hard work it entailed. Her family loved how she would mimic the way she called the cows. Ask the girls after the service if you'd like a demonstration. One time, when Lyle and Louise were dating, Lyle came into the milk barn unbeknownst to Louise, and there she was, pumping water vigorously and calling the cows. She was so embarrassed! Besides hard work on the farm, she also survived being run over twice (by a wagon and a Model T) and a total house fire.

Louise continued her education and graduated from high school at the age of sixteen. She traveled by herself to Tacoma, Washington, at the age of seventeen to be united in marriage to Lyle Shattuck on June 12, 1951. He had been activated into duty in the Army being stationed in Washington. After their time in Washington, the couple made their home on the farm west of Prescott. The couple milked cows and raised cattle. Louise also worked for Western Insurance, Sears, and for Dr. Bill Justus. She was very supportive of her three daughters' activities and was involved in 4-H, PTA, Jayhawk Linn Booster Club, and Teen Town. She was a member of the Prescott United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women, as well as PHILO Study Club.

Adventure was found in abundance throughout Louise's life. This probably would not have happened without the influence of her husband, Lyle. In her own words, she said, "Well, I didn't want to be left out." Because of this, she forfeited keeping her hair pristine by riding motorcycles on various trips. She enjoyed square dancing, horseback riding, and being with Lyle and her family. Family gatherings were memorable because of Louise's special care. There's no better cook than her - ask any grandkid. "Grandma Weez," as she was fondly called, knew each of their favorite foods. She will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister LaVerne. Louise is survived by her husband Lyle; three daughters, Debra Wood (Dave), Diane Springer (Randy), and Danna Schneider (Scott); eleven grandchildren, Daniel Springer (Chrissie), Tatum Strong (Dwight), Adam Springer (Stephanie), Quentin Springer (Leann), Job Springer (Katrina), Charlie Springer, Rachel Barker (JD), Cameron Schneider (Kristen), Caitlin Schneider, Cale Schneider, and Carter Schneider; and eighteen great grandchildren.
