Paul Filla Obituary 1947 – 2022

Following is the synopsis of the life of our husband, father, grandfather, and friend as penned by Paul himself.

Paul Filla was born Feb 4, 1947 in St Louis, MO to Dennis and Margaret Filla.  He graduated from Augustinian Academy in St Louis in 1965, attended Southern Illinois University, and graduated from National University in San Diego, CA.  Paul married the love of his life, Lynne, in 1978 who endured over 3 years of separation due to deployments in the Marine Corps and long-term temporary assignments for the Department of Defense.  She was the rock in the family and was instrumental in all Paul’s successes both Military, civilian, and ultimately in law enforcement in Linn County.  Together they have one son, Dr. Michael Filla and his wife Lori, and granddaughter Nikki.

Paul enlisted in the Marine Corps in November 1966 and went to boot camp in San Diego, CA.  Subsequently received a Warrant Officer appointment in 1973, and, in 1977, was appointed a 1stLt LDO officer.  He subsequently received a regular officer appointment and ultimately retired as a LtCol.  Paul had tours in San Diego, Camp Pendleton, Okinawa 3 times, Viet Nam, and participated in the evacuation in 1975 with 1st Battalion 9th Marines, Headquarters Marine Corps, Fleet Marine Corps Atlantic in Norfolk, VA, Marine Corps Finance Center, Kansas City, MO, and II MEF Camp Lejeune NC.  Upon retirement from the Marine Corps in December 1992, Paul worked as a civil servant for the Department of Defense, Defense Finance and Accounting Service until his retirement in September 2000.

He lived in Olathe, Kansas until his son graduated from Olathe East High school and then built a home and moved to Pleasanton, KS.  He went to work for the Linn County Sheriff Office part-time, and, after Sheriff Marvin Stites requested, attended the full-time academy.  Later, Paul ran for Sheriff and was elected Sheriff for two terms before retiring.

He is a member of the Rinehart Christian Church.
